Chilly Willy is a penguin cartoon character who was starred in a series set of 50 theatrical shorts from 1953 to 1972. He became the second most popular Lantz/Universal character after Woody Woodpecker, and made a successful transition to the screen when his shorts aired alongside other Walter Lantz cartoons on The Woody Woodpecker Show.

Paul J. Smith directed the first toon, simply titledChilly Willy(1953), the main title. The initial version of Chilly Willy resembled Woody Woodpecker, except with flippers and black feathers, but in subsequent cartoons an entirely new design was used. The alternative was named "The Deep Freeze" as the TV Print title from The Woody Woodpecker Show (1957-1972).

Tex Avery revived the character for two of his most notable shorts, 02 - I'm Cold (1954), and the Academy Award nominated 03 - The Legend of Rock-a-bye Point (1955). After Avery left the studio, the Chilly Willy cartoons were directed by Paul J. Smith and Alex Lovy, with some 1960's cartoons directed by Jack Hannah and Sid Marcus.

Most of Chilly Willy's plots always involved staying warm and finding food - and always meeting an opposition from a dog named Smedley (voiced by Daws Butler in his "Huckleberry Hound" voice). Chilly was much quite of a nuisance to Smedley than an enemy often showing up where Smedley is working, usually for some mean consumer or employer. There were other times, however, when Chilly and Smedley got along (as they did in two cartoons:26 - Fractured Friendship (1965) and 34 - Vicious Viking (1967).

Two of Chilly Willy's friends that entered in the mid-late 1960s were Maxie the Polar Bear (voiced by Daws Butler) and Gooney the "Gooney Bird" Albatross (voiced by Daws Butler impersonating Joe E. Brown). Maxie was seen with Chilly more than Gooney has. There has been only two cartoons in which all three characters have appeared together: 45 - Gooney's Goofy Landings (1970), and 48 - Airlift a la Carte (1971).

In some episodes, Chilly Willy also deals with a rough and tough (big game) hunter named Colonel Pot Shot (voiced by Daws Butler), whom Smedley was shown to work for in several episodes. His first appearance was on Toon 40 - Highway Hecklers (where he was seen driving on a truck for hunting expeditions and tries to catch both Chilly and Maxie). Pot Shot would give orders in a calm controlled voice, and then would explode in a rage when he told Smedley what would happen should he fails in his objective. Also, two episodes in 1961 had Chilly Willy outsmarting Wally Walrus comes across his fishing projects.

Chilly was mute in most of his 1950s and early 1960s cartoons, although he was voiced by Sara Berner in the initial entry, while later entries featured Daws Butler providing Chilly voice, in a style similar to his Elroy Jetson characterization. The character always speaks in in the comic book stories based on the character. Also in the comic book stories (like Knothead & Splinter) Chilly had two nephews named Ping and Pong. Chilly has a great fondness for pancakes (from 27 - Half-Baked Alaska).

When the Lantz cartoons were packaged for television in 1957 as The Woody Woodpecker Show, Chilly Willy was a featured attracted on the show, and has remained such in all later versions of the Woody Woodpecker Show package.

NOTE: On this series of Chilly Willy the Penguin, you'll notice some of the videos that are updated up to its better quality. Those were actually due to FuriousMan226 andCartoony Julio as well for the best qualities - but don't get me wrong though. The other shorts were edited better than I would ever found to save. If you are looking for someone who was it, give him credit.

Subject: RE: Where's Woody Woodpecker?

I agree that the Copyright Company is more like Copywrong.

So if we have time, we must stand and make an appeal to the copyright company that we demand fair use to be legalized publicly once and for all.

It was a false move they deleted Woody Woodpecker from any particular website, including YouTube, Internet Archive, etc.

Subject: All the Woody Woodpecker cartoons are gone!

It's such a shame that all of the WW cartoons have been taken down due to Copyright! Despite them being up for so long!

As a huge Woody Woodpecker fan, it's devastating to see this happen! I hope that either the appeal gets approved and the videos get placed back up, or they just get re-uploaded again!

At least the Chilly Willy and Andy Panda cartoons haven't been affected!

Subject: RE: Where's Woody Woodpecker

@Matt Chavez - Unfortunately, it happened on Jan. 3, where their services had taken down three or more items of Woody Woodpecker due to copyright complaints and all. There is another alternative that can help relieve his book. However, I do fear in the future that along with rest (...or at least some of the sets) may be deleted as well.

Subject: About credit

Many of the mergers were edited by my good friend Cartoony Julio, so you can credit him as well.

Also to @watchitall, I never asked for credit for the shorts themselves, I only wanted credit for my and many others' archival of the shorts.

Wow! I never heard of someone wanting credit for film they never made! Doubtful you were even alive when these were made. Vanity rears its ugly head, eh?
Five stars to Walter Lantz.
