  • Angst? What Angst?: The kids are treated to a frank discussion of how unwanted by Homer all three of them were. His eventual description of the unborn Maggie as a "ticking time bomb" about to destroy the family briefly seems to be too much for Bart and Lisa, who leave the room in apparent disgust...only because they're bored enough by this interlude to use it to get snacks and take a bathroom break.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • The ending of this episode, in which Homer tapes photos of Maggie all over the plaque that reads "Don't Forget: You're Here Forever" so it reads "Do It For Her" is widely considered to be one of the most, if not the most, touching scenes in the entire series.
    • Another notable moment is when Maggie is born and she holds Homer's thumb, turning his glumness completely around as he cuddles her lovingly and gushes about how beautiful she is while playfully prompting Marge to "show a little enthusiasm" as she smiles tiredly at them. Considering how much of an emotional roller coaster Homer went through and what he had to give up in order to provide for his family, this was definitely a sweet way to wrap up the flashback.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • When discussing the gender of the new baby, Bart tells Lisa that the baby will be a boy, since, according to him, "the order goes boy, girl, boy, girl". Not only is he soon proven wrong, but a later episode has him try to get Homer and Marge to conceive another baby so he can have a brother, only for Marge to point out that the baby might not be a boy after all, resulting in an Imagine Spot of Bart having three sisters. So much for "boy, girl, boy, girl".
    • The dramatic weight of Homer having to give up his dream job and go back to work at the power plant to provide for loses a bit of its luster when later seasons make a Running Gag out of how many times Homer either quits or is fired from his job to pursue a new one with nary a concern about finances, only to be right back at the plant the next episode, to the point where one episode reveals that the plant has dedicated forms for him leaving the job and coming back, with the episode also mentioning that he has quit 691 times.
  • It Was His Sled: Pretty much everyone knows The Reveal in the episode's final moments about what happened to Maggie's pictures.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • It has become popular for people to edit the "Do it for her" image with pictures of one's favourite character. If the character in question is male, the "her" will also be changed to "him."
    • The unedited "don't forget you're here forever" plaque has also found memetic use, often utilized to invoke the notion that "the Internet never forgets" or that certain websites will ruin your life.
    • After three decades of an increasingly volatile job market, a number of American fans have begun to joke that it'd be nice to have the guaranteed stable employment that Homer does, in spite of how it's meant to crush his spirit.
  • Signature Scene: The wall of Maggie's pictures, turning the "Don't Forget, You're Here Forever" sign into "Do It For Her".
